Why are people calling Isha Foundation a Non Profit Organization?

A lot of people have been asking why Isha Foundation is a non-profit organization but is collecting money for its programs. Many of them are asking this question genuinely and of course some of them with malicious intent. What most of them are not understanding is the very definition of a NPO.

Refer this Wikipedia link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonprofit_organization

"A nonprofit organization (NPO), also known as a non-business entity or nonprofit institution, is dedicated to furthering a particular social cause or advocating for a shared point of view. In economic terms, it is an organization that uses its surplus of the revenues to further achieve its ultimate objective, rather than distributing its income to the organization's shareholders, leaders, or members. Nonprofits are tax exempt or charitable, meaning they do not pay income tax on the money that they receive for their organization. They can operate in religious, scientific, research, or educational settings.

The key aspects of nonprofits are accountability, trustworthiness, honesty, and openness to every person who has invested time, money, and faith into the organization. Nonprofit organizations are accountable to the donors, funders, volunteers, program recipients, and the public community. Public confidence is a factor in the amount of money that a nonprofit organization is able to raise. The more nonprofits focus on their mission, the more public confidence they will have, and as a result, more money for the organization. The activities a nonprofit is partaking in can help build the public’s confidence in nonprofits, as well as how ethical the standards and practices are."

It is very important for everyone to understand the nuances of these. So, let's look at the different aspects of this first.

(1) Mode of raising money

A common misconception is that nonprofit organizations may not make a profit. Although the goal of nonprofits isn't specifically to maximize profits, they still have to operate as a fiscally responsible business. They must manage their income (both grants and donations and income from services) and expenses so as to remain a fiscally viable entity. Nonprofits have the responsibility of focusing on being professional, financially responsible, replacing self-interest and profit motive with mission motive.

The Wikipedia link also says this: "Nonprofits are not driven by generating profit, but they must produce enough income to pursue their social duties. Nonprofits are able to raise money in different ways. This includes income from donations from individual donors or foundations, sponsorships from corporations, income from government funding, income from programs, services or merchandise sales, and income from investments."

So, this very point clearly validates the approaches used by the Isha Foundation for raising money - through several of its programs, volunteer donations, merchandise sales, etc. What they do with that money, they definitely are accountable to the Government.

Of course, only those who are interested donate into it! To give a close analogy from the software world, Open-source software does not mean Free software!

(2) Dedicated to further a particular social cause

Isha Foundation dedicates itself to the main cause of raising human consciousness through its spiritual program offerings. But they have also been running massive-scale social projects:

- Action For Rural Rejuvenation
- Project GreenHands
- Isha Vidhya, etc.

Each of these projects, though operating with minimal resources, have had a tremendous impact in the society.

I have covered some of these aspects already:

What Isha Foundation has done for farmers, especially in the rural areas: http://kazhugupaarvai.blogspot.com/search/label/farmers

What Isha Foundation has done in terms of education (only one part of it though): http://kazhugupaarvai.blogspot.com/search/label/Education

What Isha Foundation has done in terms of tree plantation: http://kazhugupaarvai.blogspot.com/2017/03/isha-project-green-hands-scam-or.html

What Isha Foundation has done for Rural population in general: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_for_Rural_Rejuvenation

A tremendous amount of work has been put in by the Foundation. Some of the praise-worthy initiatives are:

- Operating mobile health clinics reaching over 2.2 million rural people
- Rural health clinics treating on an average 60+ patients each day
- Health awareness campaigns conducted through the state
- Disaster relief measures for Cuddalore Tsunami region, Chennai floods, Kerala floods, etc.
- Livelihood generation programs for rural people
- Isha Gramotsavam to restore dying village arts & sports in Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh
- More than 3 million saplings distributed, planted and tracked
- More than 35 nurseries across Tamilnadu and Pondicherry
- Dozens of Free Organic farming training sessions for farmers in Tamilnadu
- Thousands of schools engaged in tree plantation and nurturing
- 8000+ students provided scholarship education in rural Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh
- Training 1000s of teachers in Government schools for providing better education
- Free yoga classes in rural areas
- Free housing in the villages surrounding Isha Yoga Center in Coimbatore, etc.

No mainstream media usually publishes these, but that is the massive scale of work being silently done by this organization (one of the reasons why I admire it).

No wonder, they have a special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council in these areas and have won several state & central awards, under different governments / political party rules.

(3) Tax exempt

The NPOs are generally tax exempt and that means anybody who is donating money to these organizations will be given a tax exemption certificate that can be used for claiming Income Tax exemptions (upto 50% or 100% depending on the organization).

It also does not mean that the Non-Profit Organization is itself exempt from Income Tax Audits. That directly leads to #4.

(4) Accountability and Ethics

Any and all NPOs are subject at any point of time to Income Tax Audits. That is one of the critical means adopted by the Governments to keep a tab on the ethical accountability of the NPO.

Just because an organization has earned the Non-Profit status once does not mean, it can do any nonsense and continue retaining that status.

The following laws or Constitutional Articles of the Republic of India are relevant to the NGOs / NPOs:

  • Articles 19(1)(c) and 30 of the Constitution of India
  • Income Tax Act, 1961
  • Public Trusts Acts of various states
  • Societies Registration Act, 1860
  • Section 25 of the Indian Companies Act, 1956 (Section 8 as per the new Companies Act, 2013)
  • Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 1976.

Hope this post clarifies what is applicable and what is not, as far as the Non-profit Organization status of the Isha Foundation is concerned. And in any case, it is the Government of India that had recognized the Isha Foundation as a NPO based on a thorough verification all the credentials supplied, decades ago! It is not easy for any and all to apply for such a status and get it.

War on Isha and Other Hindu Organizations by Church - 2

Part 1 of this blog series can be found here: http://kazhugupaarvai.blogspot.in/2017/10/war-on-isha-and-other-hindu.html

[Note: Before you dismiss me as a xenophobic or someone who hates Christianity, hear me out. I only dislike the methods employed in religious conversions. Am against no religion.]

What is needed to stop the juggernaut of the fraud perpetrated in the name of Christianity? There are some fantastic suggestions in this blog:

https://www.saddahaq.com/how-to-stop-hindu-conversions-by-church

The author suggests:

(1) Stop Foreign Funding

It is the first and foremost step definitely. Why is there so much resistance created in public media by the Church in Tamilnadu against BJP? One simple and straight-forward reason is the number of NGOs that have been banned by the current government in Tamilnadu in 2015:

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Govt-bans-foreign-funding-for-69-NGOs-30-of-them-work-for-minorities/articleshow/46461898.cms

Who contributes to a major portion of this donation? It is the Christian missionaries!

http://www.ibtl.in/news/international/1764/it-s-official--christian-missionaries-donate-billions-to-indian-ngos/

This ban on NGOs by BJP Government had ruffled the feathers of organizations all over the world.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/jun/11/india-crackdown-foreign-funded-ngos

Why is that so? This post tries to answer some of the questions:

http://www.firstpost.com/india/uncle-sam-may-be-indirectly-funding-religious-conversion-in-india-2176175.html

While the opacity of funding arrangements would make it difficult or impossible to prove that US taxpayer money has directly supported evangelical activity, it’s hard to escape the conclusion that US-funded FBOs such as Samaritan’s Purse and Partners Worldwide are heavily proselytising in India, quite apart from whatever humanitarian or charitable work they may be doing. And this is leaving aside all of the non-government funded US-based evangelical organisations active in India, which don’t even have to maintain the pretence of separating humanitarian from evangelical work.

This sort of activity, blending charity and Christian evangelism, has aroused the concern of the Indian government. "Can social service not be performed without resorting to conversion and will any country allow changes to its demographic character?" asked India’s Home Minister Rajnath Singh recently while addressing a government commission charged with protecting the rights of minorities in India.

(2) Enforce strict Visa rules on missionaries

If you do not know this, most foreign missionaries are entering India under the garb of 'tourists' and 'teachers'.

https://www.saddahaq.com/visa-fraud-by-christian-missionaries

Of course, with the level of bribes and corruption at our immigration department, there is no doubt such cases are still getting through.

"99% of Christian Missionaries come to India on Tourist VISA. They dont follow VISA guidelines; doing Mission work on Tourist VISA is illegal as per current law they need very specifci Missionary VISA. We have to enforce this rule by doing few things Ask for written declaration “purpose of Visit” if anyone wrongly states purpose of visit, punish them to full extent of law. They can be jailed directly from airport for 3 years with no bail."

I do not know if this would be still effective now. At least in Tamilnadu, the local missionaries have become smart enough to do the mass conversions by themselves. The news is from the Horse's mouth directly:

https://christianwatchindia.wordpress.com/2008/11/18/christians-from-tamil-planning-conversions-in-7-districts-of-punjab-to-be-sponsoring-the-mission-field-work-ultimately-all-18-to-be-covered-destruction-of-indian-religions/

I will touch upon the other points in my subsequent blogs ..

Rally For Rivers - Is 8000980009 BJP's number?

Let's quickly get this out of our way first - This number 8000980009 was used by BJP in 2014 for a specific campaign but no longer!

This number is being used by the 'Rally For Rivers' campaign team only - since 2017

People go to such absurdities to malign a good cause by spreading news like this and gullible masses fall for it!

I would even say that people spreading such rumours are against restoration of rivers and are really criminals working against India itself.

Rally For Rivers endorsed by Congress party

For everyone's information, the cause of Rally For Rivers has been endorsed by the INC President, Ms Sonia Gandhi openly:

https://twitter.com/INCIndia/status/902188087886757889

Now, shouldn't people think why the Congress party would support this cause if the number is still being used by BJP?

And this endorsement came 45 days after the campaign was launched and support shown by several other celebrities / political parties. They have had plenty of time to verify all this before such a public endorsement!

Who else had used this 8000980009 number?

80009-80009 number was used earlier in:

2012 - Gutka Mukti Abhiyan
2013 - Statue of Unity
2014 - BJP

From 2015 to 2017, the 8000980009 number was with Horlicks company. Check this link: http://www.somuchthingstotell.com/2016/05/the-horlicks-immunity4growth-indiblogger-meet/

Even Coca Cola had used this number in the past!

Am I leaking my information out by missed call?

This question is as ridiculous as it could get!

Suppose I call you and you do not know me, all you have about me is the phone number. Can I trace back that number and find out who called? May be through TrueCaller app .. possibly. But imagine if 1000 people give you missed call. Would you care to do lookup all of them? May be, if I am determined hacker .. barely possibly.

Now scale it up. Already several lakhs of people have given their missed calls to this number. What about the scale when 10,000,000 people do it or even better 100,000,000 people?

Do you even think it is possible to do a reverse number lookup in that large scale? There is absolutely no way to do it! Please rest assured that such things do not happen. These are all unnecessary fears spread by vested interests working against this campaign.

Can I also get such a fancy number in India?

Sure! Anybody can have or get a fancy phone number in India. It just costs a few more rupees. A simple Google search on fancy numbers brings up this:

Now, after this campaign is over and you as an individual want to take the 8000980009 number, you could apply to the service provider and get it!

I want to take the 8000980009 number

I would say it is a bad idea to do it immediately. Typically once a phone number is used for a campaign, it will not be used by individuals or even for another campaign for a few years because many people would then call that number still inquiring about the campaign, etc.

If you still want to go ahead with it, please do!

Conclusion

People cannot and should not take their privacy easy. But at the same time they should not fall prey to such silly rumours.

In this case, odds are that it is a sheer coincidence for 8000980009 number used in an earlier campaign by BJP to be used for the 'Rally For Rivers' campaign now.

If it was used by a Congress party campaign earlier, the anti-campaign elements would simply have been in a different way. Such detractors have no other jobs than coming up non-existent ghosts like this ..

If you are still not convinced, you need this!

Is Isha exploiting or supporting tribals?

Let's explore these facts first before we make our conclusion.

Isha Foundation claims to be providing livelihood, Skill education, Primary and secondary education, health-care access to tribals at either free or highly subsidized costs.

Livelihood:

Isha has also been providing employment opportunities for the people in the surrounding localities.

- Isha Foundation has confirmed that over 375 people from the surrounding villages are engaged/employed either full-time or part-time with them. They are nurtured for bringing out the inherent creative skills, training and provided employment in various domains.

- In a bid to provide skill based training Isha has been conducting tailoring classes for the past 3 years (till 2016) in which 145 people have got trained so far. They are taught to the level of being able to set up a shop on their own. Some people have even set up shops so far after getting trained.

Some of the villagers from nearby Tribal village share their experience:

Cultural aspects:

Isha has been conducting free camps where traditional art forms like Karagam, Silambam, Kaliyal Attam, Parai Isai, Oyilattam, Thevarattam, baduga dance, lambadi dance, tribal dance, etc. Apart from these traditional dance forms, kalaripayattu (an ancient indian martial art) and drums classes are being conducted every week free of cost for them. The transportation and food are also being provided free to these children.

Housing:

- So far, 112 houses ( Dhanikandi – 39, Mullangadu – 20, Nellore padi – 5, Gandhi Colony – Semmedu – 3) have been constructed so far by Isha foundation free of cost for people inhabiting surrounding villages!

- Toilet facilities have also been built in 4 government schools located near Isha Yoga Center, Coimbatore

- The government school at Semmedu village confirms that renovation works to the tune of 3 lakhs has been done by Isha Foundation for the school.

Health:

- Isha has been running mobile clinics since the year 2003 and has so far treated 1.9 lakh people in 54 villages in the last 4 years alone (till 2016).

- Rural health clinics have also been set up at Alandurai, muutathuvayal and kullapanayakanur (salem) to cater to the needs of the rural people.

- 1380 households have been touched so far in semmedu village so far from 'Dry waste' and 'solid waste' management.

Conclusion:

- All this information has been gleaned from public domain, Facebook pages, Isha's web site, etc.

- The sharing of villagers from the videos is very clear and honest. They have given their names and village names also for anyone to verify.

- Isha's social works have been applauded by eminent people like Dr.Sivathanu Pillai (colleague of Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam, Dr. Satish Dhawan, etc.) and even organizations like Infosys Foundation.

- I looked at some of the media news about tribals complaining about Isha Foundation. They are laughably off in terms of clarity in information.

- I do not expect everything to be rosy 100% with Isha foundation. There could have been definitely faults here and there.

- But the overall scenario shows a very positive contribution to the tribal societies. Even looking at these statistics can show how much of social work has been done

Media is publishing rubbish almost non-stop. Not many are publishing facts and statistics any longer. Sad trend that has to be reversed soon!

Isha Project Green Hands - Scheming or Scintillating?

As in my earlier post regarding the contribution of Isha Foundation to farming community, this post will also start with information available in public domain, with my comments interspersed.

About Project Green Hands (PGH)

Isha's Project Green Hands was launched with a vision to sensitize people towards environment protection and to inspire people to plant trees, develop a culture of care towards the environment and help them realize their inevitable dependency on nature.

Initially, the project was started with an aim to increase the green cover of Tamil Nadu by 10% by planting 114 million saplings in order to reverse desertification, reduce soil erosion, restore self-sufficiency, recreate sustainability and survives climate change.

Current status

The  project  has  till  date  enabled planting of more  than  3 crore tree saplings. PGH claims a plant survival rate of over 60%, which means about 2 crore surviving tree saplings.

My opinion on PGH planting drives

Even if the world average of such planting drives is just 20% and PGH meets that, it is still a mind-boggling 60 Lakh surviving tree saplings. That is a huge step forward in terms of enabling afforestation in Tamilnadu.

Some social activists were claiming that Isha has not compensated enough for the lands they have constructed their buildings in. I hope any sane person can see the statistics for themselves and know that it is more than compensated for. This is a definite plus of PGH’s work so far!

Recognitions for Isha's Project Green Hands

Some of the recognitions for Isha’s work in the field of environment are (information in public domain):

In  2010 -  PGH was awarded India’s highest environmental award; the Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar (for the year 2008) instituted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, in recognition of PGH’s positive ecological impact

·      On April 5th 2012, PGH was awarded the “Environmental Award – 2010” by the Department of Environment, Government of Tamil Nadu.

·      Accredited “Special Consultative Status” by UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 2007.

·      On 30th September 2010, PGH was awarded the “Sport for the Environment” award at the Beyond Sports summit in Chicago. Beyond Sports is a global organization that promotes and funds the use of sport to create positive social change across the world.

·      In 2016, PGH was the Winner of India Today’s 2016 Safaigiri Award under the category - Best Community Mobilizer for increasing the green cover of the country.

·      On 13th July, 2013 PGH was awarded by the LASSIB Society, Honorary Award for delivering outstanding outcomes in the area of Nurturing Natural Resources.

·      PGH set a Guinness World Record on 17th October, 2006 for planting maximum number of saplings in a single day. 8, 52,587 saplings were planted in 6,284 locations across 27 districts in Tamil Nadu

Isha PGH’s work in and around their yoga center

The TN Forest department has acknowledged Isha’s invovlement in preserving the ecology of the Velliangiri mountains by planting saplings, cleaning the mountains regularly to preserve the pristine mountains.

·     In 2004, Isha volunteers planted 77,151 saplings as part of the ‘Velliangiri Hills Conservation Project’ in association with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department to conserve the ecology of the mountains.

·     Every year after the Mahashivratri celebrations, the Sanyasins and volunteers of Isha Foundation trek the Velliangiri Hills as part of Kar Seva to clean the hills of litter and garbage in order to maintain its pristine glory.

·      PGH Volunteers have planted and grown over 300 trees along the roadside from irutupallam to Isha Yoga Center.

·      PGH volunteers have been conducting various awareness sessions regarding our environment both to the local tribals and also to various other people.

My final take on PGH

·      Such plantation drives are very very essential to not just the ecological preservation, but for mankind itself.

·      A lot of us are so ignorant that we think trees planted are going to be standing up forver. A recent cyclone in Chennai uprooted over 1 lakh trees in a couple of days. Not many know that world over, there are about 15 million trees being cut every day.

·      There are some friends of mine who do not think twice before ridiculing such plantation efforts. When I tried educating them about why such drives are needed constantly, with facts, they suddenly became very interested in participating. Some of them have taken the support of Project Green Hands team as well. As updated in one of my earlier posts, I happened to check their sapling distribution effort in Chennai Lit Fest.

·      Is PGH really a scam? I strongly disagree. The reason is simple. They have pictures of the various plantation drives done, they show accountability in terms of audit records for trees planted. They also collaborate with corporates like Sony, Cognizant, L&T, etc. Now, these institutions do their background checks thoroughly and keep a clear record of what happens to their donation money. Obviously accountability comes in clean and loud here.

·      Above all, PGH being a Guinness World Record holder, one should know that the GWR is not given to just about anybody. The Guinness team does a very thorough check before they award their certificates. So, it would be silly to downplay such an effort and not wonder at what drives these volunteers to maintain such stupendous performance.
